Kings of Israel

Originally Israel was comprised of the 12 tribes of Israel which took possession of Canaan, the promised land of milk and honey, when they crossed the Jordan River under Joshua's leadership after the death of Moses. They settled and remained for sometime under the blessing of the Lord, but when they had not sought the Lord their God and turned to other gods and provoked Him to anger, He brought His wrath upon them.  He allowed the nation to split, keeping for Himself the crown of promise that He made to David that He would remain their God and give them a king who would sit upon the throne forever.

The split happened under the reign of Rehaboam, the son of Solomon, the grandson of David. Ten (10) of the tribes of the northern district formed the independent Nation of Israel, establishing Sameria as their capital. . They where Asher, Dan, Ephraim, Gad, Issachar, Manasseh, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, and Zebulun. This new nation established Jeraboam as their king, and they quickly exiled the Levitcal priests, they forsaking the Lord. The two (2) tribes that remained were Judah and Benjamin, in the southern district. The lampstand of God stayed with these remaining nations, which was duly named Judah with the capital Jerusalem.
Jeroboam (The people contend)
Reign: 22 years
Prophet: Ahijah the Shilonite -told him that 10 tribes be given to him, and a man of God from Judah came to Bethel by the word of the LORD.
In God's Eyes: Evil
Scripture: (1 Kings 11:26-40; 12:1-33; 13:1-33; 14:1-20, 30; 15:1, 6-7, 9; 25, 29-30, 34; 16:1-31; 21:22; 22:52); (2 Kings 3:3; 9:9; 10:29, 31; 13:2, 6, 11, 13; 14:23-29; 15:1, 8-9, 18, 24, 28; 17:21-22; 23:15); (2 Chronicles 10:2-3, 12, 15; 11:4, 14; 12:15; 13:1-20); (Hosea 1:1; Amos 1:1; 7:9-11)
Father: Son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah,
Mother: Zeruah, a widow
Capital:
Built in Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim
Walked in the way of: He created his own church, false prophets and new holidays
Spiritual Works: Jeroboam hid is own sin by creating a gold calves idols and goat idols his own holidays on days he chose for the people to worship. He sent all the Levites, the priests of the Lord away, and they went to Judah. Placing one in Dan and other in Bethel. He made his own priests, none Levites, who were stationed at Bethel. He worshiped at Bethel.
Notes:  Jeroboam, a servant of Solomon, lifted up his hand against Solomon because Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of David. Solomon saw that Jeroboam was able and an industrious person, so he put him in charge of the forced labor of the house of Joseph.

Ahijah prophecy that he would get 10 tribes as Solomon led the people to sin by worshiping:
  1. Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians,
  2. Chemosh the god of Moab,
  3. Moloch the god of Ammonites,
  4. and they have not walked in my ways, doing what was right in my sight and keeping my statues and my rules, as David his father did, also he could reign over all his soul desires and be king of Israel, and if listen to all I command and will walk in my ways and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commands, as David did, I will be with you and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you, and I will afflict the offspring of David because of this but not forever. So Solomon sought to kill him, but he arose and fled into Egypt to Shiskak king of Egypt and remained until the death of Solomon.

When Rehoboam was being made king in Shechem, Jerobaom returned from Egypt and told Rehoboam to lighten the hard service of his father to lift the heavy yoke off them and we will serve you. Rehoboam listened to bad counsel and after 3 days of he swore to hardened it, and he lost the 10 tribes of the kingdom. The Israel people stoned Adoram, the taskmaster of Rehoboam to death and Rehoboam ran back to Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day (1 Kings 12:19). They made Jeroboam king over themselves. Lived in Shechem, went out from there and built Penuel.

He said in his heart, that the people would turn back to the house of David, if they went and made sacrifice in the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem, the people's hearts would turn again to Rehoboam, and they'll kill me. So he took counsel and made two gold calves, and said to the people, 'You've gone to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your god who brought you up out of Egypt.'  He set one in Bethel and other in Dan. This became a sin for they went to them. He sent all the Levites out of Israel from serving as priests of the LORD (2 Chronicles 11:14). He also made temples (pagan shrines) on high places and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not Levites, to be priests of the goat and calve idols. He set up a feast on same day as in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar of the calf.  He put the false priests in Bethel on the 15th day in the 8th month a time he set from his own heart. He instituted a feast for the people and they went up to the altar to make offerings.  A man of God came from Judah to Bethel while he was making his offering. And this man cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, 'O altar, altar, thus said the LORD; "Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and on you shall he offer the priests of the high places who (burn incenses) make offering on you, and human bones shall be burned on you." (1 Kings 13:2). And he gave a sign that the LORD has spoken; 'Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out." (1 Kings 13:3b). He raised his hand to have his people seize the man and it dried up. The altar was torn down (somehow?). He asked the man to pray for healing and he did and it was healed. The prophet wasn't to eat or drink or stay but he believed the old prophet so he went back and eat and drank with them, and the lion killed him, so the old prophet got his body and buried him in his grave and asked his sons to put their bones together because his prophecy against the altar of Bethel and the people would come to pass.

Jeroboam's son, Abijah, got sick so he had his mother disguise herself but the Lord told Ahijah she was coming, and he told her that since the kingdom was taken from David and given to Jeroboam and he did not follow the Lord, and provoked God to anger, the Lord will bring harm upon his house and cut off every male in Israel, and will burn up the house of Jeroboam, anyone belonging to him will die in city and birds will eat those who die in open country. When you get home, the child shall die. The Lord shall raise up for himself a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam today. And henceforth, the LORD will strike Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and root up Israel out of this good land that he gave to their fathers and scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherim, provoking the LORD to anger. And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he sinned and made Israel to sin.' (1 Kings 14:14).

There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. Abijah became king of Judah in his 18th year and Abijah reigned for 3 years and there was war between them too. Then in Jeroboam's 20th year, Asa became king of Judah king (Asa would reign for 41 years). Jeroboam's son, Nadab began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa and he reigned for 2 years.

Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon. He was killed in the third year of Asa. Baasha became king of Israel, and as soon as he was king he killed all the house of Jeraboam.

25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 26 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of his father and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit. 27 Baasha son of Ahijah from the tribe of Issachar plotted against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it. 28 Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and succeeded him as king.
29 As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam’s whole family. He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all, according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite. 30 This happened because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and because he aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel. 31 As for the other events of Nadab’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 32 There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.

Notes:  Baasha (H1201 Basha a king of Isr from the root to stink, offensiveness) struck down Nadab at Gibbethon (H1405 Gibbethon mound; from H1354 gab a back) when Nadab was laying siege at Gibbethon; he became king immediately which was in the third (3) year of Asa king of Judah; killed all Jeroboam's descendants as God's retribution for the sin of Jeroboam and leading the people to sin invoking the anger of provocation of the Lord. Invaded Asa, the king of Judah. The Lord spoke through Jehu the son of Hanani, against Baasha saying, I raised you out of the dust but you walked in the ways of Jerobaom and have made my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger. I will sweep your house away, like I did Jerobaom, anyone who dies in city the dogs shall eat and the birds eat those in the open country; descendants will be killed.

In his last year to reign, which was the 24th for him and the 26 year for Asa king of Judah, he went up against Judah and built Ramah, a city 5 miles north of Jerusalem, to prevent travel in or out of Judah. King Asa took treasures from the house of the Lord and the king's palace and sent them to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who lived in Damascus, to make a covenant, to have him break his covenant with Baasah king of Israel so he would withdraw from Judah. Ben-hadad listened and sent his army against the cities of Israel, conquering extensive territory Ijon, Dan, Abel-main, and all the cities of Naphtali. When Baasha heard it, he stopped building Ramah, so Asa took the materials (stone and timbers) to build Geba and Mizpah.

Baasha slept with his fathers and was buried at Tirzah (H8645 itrzah a tree, perhaps a cypress because from H7329 razah to grow lean), and Elah his son reigned in his place in the 26 year of Asa king of Judah. Jehu's prophecy came true with the assassination of Baasha's son Elah.

Elah (H425 Elah terebinth, oak tree) became king of Israel in 26 yr of Asa the king of Judah. Prophecy against Baasha his father that all descendants would die. His servant Zimri (H2174 Zimriy my music from H2167 zamar to make music, in praise of God), commander of half his chariots conspired against him. When Elah was drinking at the house of Arza (H777 artsa earthy) in Tirzah, Zimri came and struck him down and killed him in the 27th year of Asa. Zimri seated himself on the throne and began to reign. He struck down the entire house of Baasha according to the word of the Lord by Juhu the prophet.

8 In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king of Israel, and he reigned in Tirzah two years. 9 Zimri, one of his officials, who had command of half his chariots, plotted against him. Elah was in Tirzah at the time, getting drunk in the home of Arza, the palace administrator at Tirzah. 10 Zimri came in, struck him down and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah. Then he succeeded him as king. 11 As soon as he began to reign and was seated on the throne, he killed off Baasha’s whole family. He did not spare a single male, whether relative or friend. 12 So Zimri destroyed the whole family of Baasha, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken against Baasha through the prophet Jehu-- 13 because of all the sins Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit, so that they aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, by their worthless idols. 14 As for the other events of Elah’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

Notes:
In 27 yr of Asa in Judah, Zimri (H2174 Zimriy my music from H2167 zamar to make music, in praise of God) walked into the house of Arza, supervisor of the place, and killed Elah the king of Israel, who was drunk, he became king; Zimri was the commander of 1/2 royal chariots; he immediately killed Baasha's entire family for God's retribution as Baasha and Elah led Israel to sin.

The troops were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, and the troops heard that he conspired and killed their king. Therefore, all Israel made Omri, the commander of the army, the king over them and they besieged Tirzah. When Zimri saw the city was taken, he went into the palace and burned it down over himself, because of the sin he committed in the sight of the Lord, walking in the way of Jeroboam.

15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri reigned in Tirzah seven days. The army was encamped near Gibbethon, a Philistine town. 16 When the Israelites in the camp heard that Zimri had plotted against the king and murdered him, they proclaimed Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that very day there in the camp. 17 Then Omri and all the Israelites with him withdrew from Gibbethon and laid siege to Tirzah. 18 When Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace and set the palace on fire around him. So he died, 19 because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the eyes of the Lord and following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit. 20 As for the other events of Zimri’s reign, and the rebellion he carried out, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

Capital: 6 yrs in Tirzah and 6 Samaria (he bought hill country from Shemer for two talents of silver and called it Samaria, after the former owner)
Walked in the way of: Completely walked in the ways of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat
Spiritual Works: Provoked the Lord to anger by their idols
Notes: When Zimri killed Elah the king of Israel, the people were gathered together for battle at Gibbethon and the troops heard of what he did, so they decided to make Omri, their commander of the army their king instead, and they besieged Tirzah, and when Zimri saw it he burned himself up in the palace. Now the people of Israel split into 2 factions: 1/2 of them followed Tibni, the son of Ginath to make him king, and other half supported Omri as king. Omri's supporters defeated the revolt and Tibni was killed.

Omri bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver, and he fortified the hill and called the city he built, Samaria, after the name of Shemer, the owner of the hill. Omri began to rule in 31 yr of Asa, Omri slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and Ahab his son reigned in his place.

21 Then the people of Israel were split into two factions; half supported Tibni son of Ginath for king, and the other half supported Omri. 22 But Omri’s followers proved stronger than those of Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king. 23 In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned twelve years, six of them in Tirzah. 24 He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver and built a city on the hill, calling it Samaria, after Shemer, the name of the former owner of the hill. 25 But Omri did evil in the eyes of the Lord and sinned more than all those before him. 26 He followed completely the ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat, committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit, so that they aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, by their worthless idols. 27 As for the other events of Omri’s reign, what he did and the things he achieved, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 28 Omri rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Ahab his son succeeded him as king. 29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years.

Capital: Samaria
Walked in the way of: Not only followed the ways of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, but also he married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal king of Sidonians, and was influenced by her.
Spiritual Works: They sinned by following Jeroboam's gold calves idols and goat idols with his own holidays on days he chose for the people to worship, minus the Levital priests of the Lord for they were sent away, with the idols in Dan and in Bethel, where the false priests were located. But now Ahab began to serve and worship Baal and introduced Baal worship to the people of Israel from Jezebel and erected the House (Temple) of Baal in Samaria and he made an Asherah. He did more than anyone before him to provoke the Lord to anger.

Aside: During the time of Ahab, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho, at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, when he laid the foundation, and lost his youngest son, Segub when he set up the gates in accordance with the word (curse) the Lord spoke through Joshua, son of Nun.

Notes: Abah's Reigh (1 Kings 16:29-34):
Ahab (H158 ahab love, affection from H157 aheb to love) began to reign in the 38th year of Asa king of Judah. built temple and altar to Baal in Samaria and set up Asherah pole; began to bow down and worship Baal; in his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho, laying the foundation at the cost of Abiram his firsborn and set up it's gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord which was spoken by Joshua the son of Nun.

Elijah declares no rain for 3 years (1 Kings 17). Elijah the Tishbite of Tishbe in Gilead withheld rain and dew for 3 yrs, except by my word, then the Lord told him turn yourself eastward and hide in brook of Kerith (Cherith; H3747 cutting; off or down) east of the Jordan and ravens will feed (bread and meat in morning and evening) you and drink from the brook. When the brook dried because of no rain, God told him to go to Zarephath (H6886 Tsarephath smelting place, to refine, test) where he asked the widow to feed him and she did, she said, As the LORD your God lives ... which implies that she knew who he was especially when she called him, oh man of God when her son died and raised him back to life (it makes it more comprehensible that she would feed him first, know he was a man of God), when he raised him to life, then she said she knew he was a man of God. (Just as Jesus' miracles gave witness that He was the Son of God).

Elijah 2 Altars: Baal or God. Obadiah leads Elijah to Ahab (1 Kings 18). God calls Elijah to present himself to Ahab at the end of the 3 years and the famine was severe in Samaria. Ahab wanted to find grass for the animals so he was going to search the land with Obadiah, both going in different directions. Obadiah found Elijah and bowed himself to the ground. Obadiah was afraid to go tell Ahab that he found Elijah, in case he would be swept away by God, for Jezebel killed the Lord's prophets so Obadiah was hiding a hundred of them in 2 different caves. Elijah promised he would be there, so he got Ahab. Ahab called him a troubler of Israel, but Elijah said it was Ahab and his family. Elijah called the people and asked how long they would limb between 2 different opinions? He gave them a choice; God or Baal. If God is real then worship him and if Baal is then worship him. He called for 450 prophets of Baal and two altars. Allowed them to all day to call fire down on the Baal altar, while he mocked him. Then he had them put water over his altar 3 times and he called on the Lord and fire came down and burned it and licked the water up. He had them led the Baal prophets down to the brook of Kishon and he slaughtered them there. Elijah went to Mount Carmel to call forth the rain. Ahab went to eat and drink. Then the rain came. Ahab went to Jezreel on a chariot but Elijah ran there first on foot.
Jezebel's Reaction (1 Kings 19). Ahab told Jezebel everything. She sent a message to Elijah that she would kill him by the next day. He was afraid and fled to Beersheba, in Judah. He went into the wilderness under a broom tree and asked to die. Angel feed him and had him rest. With that strength he went for 40 days and nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. The Lord asked what he was doing there. He told him that only he was left, but the Lord said, I'll pass by; so a strong wind tore and broke the rocks on the mountain into pieces, then an earthquake, then a fire but the Lord wasn't in them, as he was in the still small voice. ...
Elijah anoints Hazael to be king of Aram and Jehu for Israel and Elisha as prophet; taken into heaven in chariot;

2 times, Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad of Aram in Syria (1 Kings 20). Ben-Hadad (means 'son of Hadad' and hadad or adad is the god of storm and thunder, so he was to be the son of a god, as common in those days) king of Aram gathers 32 kings together to close in on Samaria and demanded, your wealth and children, woman and children are mine (1 Kings 20:3). Ahab called his elders (friends) and sought counsel and they said, don't listen or give consent (1 Kings 20:8). Ahab agreed to give half, and then the enemy came back saying he would destroy all of them, leaving not even a handful of dust from the ground. He gave a backhanded comment and Ben-hadad prepared for an attack. Meanwhile the prophets came to Ahab and said the Lord would give him the victory so he would know that He is God. So Ahab got his 7,000 men and went up against 32 kings allied together. With the junior army leading the fight, they struck down each of their opponents and the Arameans fled with the Israelites in pursuing and inflicting heavy losses, but Ben-hadad escaped. Ben-hadad's men told him that Israel's gods are gods of the hills so they need to fight on the plains. The next spring, he summoned them for another fight. The Israelites were like two small flocks of goats while the Arameans covered the countryside. But the man of God told Ahab, the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the Lord. 7 days they camped opposite each other and the Israelites inflicted hundreds of thousands of casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day, the rest escaped to the city of Aphek, where the walls collapsed on 27,000 of them. Ben-hadad fled and hid in the inner room of the city. Then the officials said to him that the kings of Israel are merciful so lets go in sackcloth and ropes around our heads, and perhaps they will spare our lives.  Ben-hadad offered to let Ahab have the territories his father stole, plus they could set up their own market in Damascus as their father did in Samaria before. And on the basis of a treaty, Ahab did and left Ben-hadad go. (1 Kings 20:34). A prophet made someone strike him and covered his face and got Ahab to pronounce his own judgment over himself, of death, because the Lord determined that Ben-hadad was to have been killed. (no deals with the devil, get them out of your life).
  • Note on Ben-hadad: Asa king of Judah made a treaty with Ben-Hadad and he attacked Baasha king of Israel for Asa and Aram took extensive territories: Ijon, Dan, Abel-main, and all cities of Naphtali (2 Chronicles 16:2-4). Now he is attacking the north again, with Ahab as the king and the Lord defeats him (1 Kings 20, 22). Then Ben-Hadad attacks the north again around 9 years after Ahab's death in war in Ramoth-gilead, and now when Elisha was prophet and many people in Israel's siege were starved to death, in the middle of night the Lord causes the Aramean army to hear sounds of advancing army and they think it's the king of Israel, who isn't named (war between spirits) is getting help from other nations, and they flee leaving everything behind (2 Kings 6-7). Later another Ben-Hadad is defeated 3 times by Jehoash king of Israel fulfilling prophecy of Elisha (2 Kings 13:1-15).
  • Naphtali means to wrestle mightily but to prevail (Genesis 30:8), and is a doe let loose that bears beautiful fawns (Genesis 49:21) and O Naphtali, sated with favor, and full of the blessing of the LORD, possess the lake and the south (Deuteronomy 33:32).  It was the eastern side of the Galilee, known as upper and lower Galilee. It has Kedesh in Galilee, the city of refuge.

Jezebel Burns Naboth's Vineyard (1 Kings 21). Some time later Ahab wants the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite in Jezreel which is close to the palace of Ahab the king of Samaria. Ahab wants it for a vegetable garden and he will pay him whatever he wants. Naboth said, The LORD forbid that I give you the inheritance of my ancestors (1 Kings 21:3). Ahab was sullen and angry and he laid on his bed sulking and refused to eat. Jezebel says is this how you treat the king of Israel, she says get up and eat and I'll get you the vineyard. So she wrote a letter in Ahab's name with his seal and sent it to the elders of Naboth's city saying to have a day of fast then plant 2 scoundrels to make false charges against him that he cursed both God and king then take him and stone him to death.  They did it. Then she told Ahab to go take possession of the vineyard of Naboth. Consequences: The word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, go to Ahab who is taking possession of Naboth's vineyard and ask, Have you murdered an a man and seized his property?  and then say, In the place where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, dogs will lick up your blood. (1 Kings 21:19). When Ahab saw Elijah, he said, You have found me, my enemy (1 Kings 21:20). And he replied, yes because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. I will bring disaster on you, wiping out you and your house of descendants - like the house of Jerobaom and Baasha. And dogs will devour Jezelbel by the wall of Jezreel (1 Kings 21:23). Dogs feed on those in the city and birds in the country. When he heard these words, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly. Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite: 'Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his sons. (1 Kings 21:28). The LORD has mercy, our actions have consequences!!!!

There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel. (1 Kings 20:25).

For 3 years no war between Aram (Syria) and Israel.

Ahab (Israel) invites Jehoshaphat (Judah) to reclaim Israelie lost territory under control of Syria, against Ben-hadad the king of Aram (Syria) at Ramoth-gilead (1 Kings 22); (2 Chronicles 18). Micaiah prophecies his death in war against Aram alongside Jehoshaphat of Judah.  Jehoshaphat, when he had great wealth and riches, made a marriage alliance with Ahab, after some years Jehoshaphat went down to see Ahab in Samaria. Ahab and him people treated him to a feast: killing an abundance of sheep ans oxen to induce him to join them in going to war against Syria to regain Ramoth-gilead. Jehoshaphat told him that all his people were Ahab's people, but just he told him to inquire of the Lord. So Ahab gathered 400 (false) prophets together and they said, go the Lord is with you. Jehoshaphat asked if any other prophets, and Ahab said one named Micaiah, the son of Imlah, but he said he hated him because he never prophecies anything good of him, but always evil. Jehoshaphat rebukes him for saying such things and Ahab calls for Micaiah to come quickly. Now both kings were on thrones, at the entrance to the gate of Samaria. Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah was the leading false prophet so said go to war, and Micaiah prophecies Ahab's defeat: He told him the Lord sent a lying spirit into the mouth of his prophets to encourage him to go to battle to entice him because the Lord has declared disaster concerning you. Ahab had Micaiah taken to Amon the governor of the city and Joash the king's son to imprison him with meager rations of food.
They Go to War. They go to attack Ramoth-gilead. Ahab suggests a deceptive plan that he will go to battle in disguise, but he told Jehoshaphat  to keep his royal uniform on as a king (set him up - entrapment from the beginning) in the war against Aram. The king of Aram, Syria told his 32 chariot commanders, Do not attack unimportant soldiers or ranking officers, Go after only th eking of Israel (the Lord always provides a way of escape). So the Aramean saw a king dressed (Jehoshaphat) and pursued him (the trap was set) they advanced to kill him, and Jehoshaphat cried to the Lord (always pray) and the Lord saved him (God listens and saves His righteous ones) by drawing them away from him for they saw it wasn't Ahab, so they turned away (The Lord accomplishes what He set out to do - there is victory in the LORD!). Meanwhile, a man drew a random bow and struck Ahab between the scale armor and breastplate (a wicked man always comes to ruin by the trap he sets) and he asked told his chariot driver to turn around and take him out of the battle for he was severely wounded. He remained propped up in his chariot facing the battle until evening and at sunset he died (The prophecy of Micaiah was fulfilled, and the prophecy of Elijah will happen by the hand of Jehu, a man the Lord raises up to destroy the household of Ahab and kill Jezebel). His blood rain down into the bottom of the chariot. He was brought back to Samaria and buried there. They washed the blood from the chariot by the reservoir of Samaria to keep the prophecy of the Lord and the dogs licked up the his blood, near where the prostitutes bath.

51 Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 52 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. 53 He served and worshiped Baal and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done.

1 After Ahab’s death, Moab rebelled against Israel. 2 Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, “Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.” 3 But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?’ 4 Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!’” So Elijah went. 5 When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, “Why have you come back?” 6 “A man came to meet us,” they replied. “And he said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, “This is what the Lord says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!”’” 7 The king asked them, “What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?” 8 They replied, “He had a garment of hair[a] and had a leather belt around his waist.” The king said, “That was Elijah the Tishbite.” 9 Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “Man of God, the king says, ‘Come down!’” 10 Elijah answered the captain, “If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!” Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men. 11 At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. The captain said to him, “Man of God, this is what the king says, ‘Come down at once!’” 12 “If I am a man of God,” Elijah replied, “may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!” Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men. 13 So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. “Man of God,” he begged, “please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants! 14 See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men. But now have respect for my life!” 15 The angel of the Lord said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.
16 He told the king, “This is what the Lord says: Is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult that you have sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!” 17 So he died, according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken. Because Ahaziah had no son, Joram succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. 18 As for all the other events of Ahaziah’s reign, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?

 began in 18th yr of Jehoshaphat from Samaria; evil but not as bad as father and mother; tore down Baal pillar that his father built; Joram, Jehoshaphat and king of Edom defeated Edom; adviced Ahaziah to war against Hazael of Aram and he was wounded and God sent Jehu as retrobution and he killed Ahaziah and Joram;

1 Joram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them. 4 Now Mesha king of Moab raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?” “I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked. “Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom. After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them. 10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?” 11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.” 12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.” “No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.” 14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.” While the harpist was playing, the hand of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.” 20 The next morning, about the time for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water. 21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!” 24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it. 26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

Notes: Elisha gave anointed oil to a prophet to go to Ramoth-gilead and anoint Jehu and when he got there the commanders of the army were in council. (2 Kings 9:4). He took him into an inner room and anointed him telling him he must strike down the house of Ahab your master to avenge the blood of my servants from Jezebel, and make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her. Then he opened the door and fled.

Jehu kills Joram (Israel) and Ahaziah (Judah). Then Jehu conspired against Joram, who was on guard with all Israel at Ramoth-gilead against the hazael king of Syria, but king Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel (H3158 sown of God) of wounds when he fought with Hazael king of Syria. Ahaziah king of Judah came to visit Joram at Jezreel. 2 horsemen were sent to see if they came in peace, but he told them, what do you know of peace and told them to get behind him. (tell this to demons). So the 2 kings (Joram of Israel and Ahaziah of Judah) came out to meet Jehu at the property of Naboth (H5022 Naboth to abhor, spurn) the Jezreelite (God sows). Joram asked if Jehu came in peace, and replied, How can there be peace as long as the whoring and sorceries of your mother Jezebel are so many? (2 Kings 9:22). Jehu shot Joram through the heart in his chariot. Jehu told them to through his body on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite to fulfill word of Lord when they rode with Ahab. When Ahaziah king of Judah saw this, he fled towards Beth-haggan (house of the garden) but Jehu pursued and shot him in the chariot at the ascent of Gur (H1483 sojourning) which is by Ibleam (H2991 devouring the people) and he fled to Megiddo (H4023 place of crowds) and died there.

Jehu kills Jezebel. Jehu came to Jazreel, Jezebel painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out the window. When he came to the gate she asked, Is it peace, you Zimri, murdrer of your master? (2 Kings 9:31). She tried to seduce him with her looks and arrogance. He asked who was on his side, and two eunuchs looked down and he told them to throw her down and they did. Some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses as they trampled on her. Jehu went and ate and drank, then he told them to bury her since she was a king's daughter, but they only found her skull, feet and palms of her hands. They said it was to fulfill the word of the Lord through Elijah the Tishbite.

Jehu kills Ahab's Descendants. Jehu orders the beheading of Ahab's 70 sons at Samaria and his servants do it and send the heads in baskets to Jezreel and laid them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning. Then Jehu went out in the morning and pronounced the people's innocence. He kills the remaining relatives of the house of Ahab to fulfill Elijiah's prophecy, including great men, the close friends and priests.

Jehu Kills Princes of Ahaziah and the Rest of Ahab's family. On way to Samaria, went to Beth-eked of the Shepherds, He met a caravan of people and he asked who they were and they said they where the relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah on their way to visit the princes of Israel and the sons of the Queen Mother. He took them alive to the pit of Beth-eked, all 42 relatives of Ahaziah killed them. Then as he traveled Jehonadab, son of Rechab joined him and watched him kill the rest of the Ahab's family in Samaria, with his zeal for the Lord.

Jehu kills Prophets of Baal. Jehu kills all Baal worshipers and removed ever trace of Baal worship in Israel; He wiped out Baal from Israel, but he didn't turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam - that is, the gold calves that were in Bethel and Dan. didn't destroy golden calf at Bethel in Dan; God promised to king 4 generations of his; he was not careful to walk in the law of God with all his heart because he didn't turn from the sins of Jerobaom, followed Jeroboam's ways so God cut down Israel's territory; Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel, from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gileah, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is Gilead and Bashan. Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried in Samaria. And his son, Jehoahaz reigned in his place.

13 In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord by following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them. 3 So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and for a long time he kept them under the power of Hazael king of Aram and Ben-Hadad his son. 4 Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5 The Lord provided a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6 But they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole remained standing in Samaria. 7 Nothing had been left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust at threshing time. 8 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoahaz, all he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 9 Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. 22 Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.

Notes: 1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, Hoshea son of Elah became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned nine years. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
3 Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up to attack Hoshea, who had been Shalmaneser’s vassal and had paid him tribute. 4 But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, for he had sent envoys to So king of Egypt, and he no longer paid tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore Shalmaneser seized him and put him in prison. 5 The king of Assyria invaded the entire land, marched against Samaria and laid siege to it for three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in the towns of the Medes.
