55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.

​The Law was Give to Bind Sin and Set the Captive Free.  God wanted fellowship with man, and He made a promise to Abraham that it would happen, and all who believe will receive the promise. But before He could have fellowship, or even friendship, with mankind, He had to deal with our transgressions. His righteousness required Him to deal with our transgressions of His perfect and pure holiness. He accomplished this by giving us the law, which would first enslave us and then set us free (Galatians 3:22).
  1. The law enslaved us (Galatians 3:22)
  2.  The law make the whole world accountable to God (Romans 3:19).
  3. Now we could draw near to God (Hebrews 7:19) for love of the law (Psalm 119:97) for it is perfect (Psalms 19:7a).
    1. Through this process, instead of seeking our own hearts desires, which are desperately wicked (Genesis 6:5; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 8:7; Philippians 2:21),
  4. The law was perfect, but it made nothing perfect, because of the weakness of the flesh (Hebrews 7:18-19).
  5. The law was brought because of transgression (Galatians 3:19),
  6. for it gave knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20; 7:7b),
  7. so it could be bound or imprisoned under one title, 'sin' (Galatians 3:22).
  8. Sin was dead, but the law brought it to life (Romans 7:8)
  9. for it used the law against me to deceiving me, by arousing my sinful passions, which killed me (1 Corinthians 15:56; Romans 7:5; 9-11).

  11. So the law imprisoned us, made us sin more, and killed us even though it is perfect and good. Our hearts only wanted evilness, even while knowing righteousness via the law . There has to be a reason why this was necessary? Yes, it was so we could be held under the law ​, which served as our guardian, or schoolmaster (Galatians 3:23-25). 
  12. The law of Moses was called a curse, for it enslaved everyone under judgment for sin and death, making people accountable to God, until Christ died on the cross to set man, Jew and gentile, free from the law (Galatians 3:2, 10, 13, 19-25; 5:3-4; Romans 4:15; 7:23; 10:4; Hebrews 7:18-19; 8:7; 10:1; Philippians 3:9).
  13. The law was brought because of transgression (1 Corinthians 15:56; Galatians 3:19),
  14. for it gave knowledge of it (Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7)
  15. Paul found a principle (the law) that evil is present (became sin came to life via the law), when I will to do good (Romans 7:21).  
  16. Sin was dead, until the law brought it to life (Romans 7:8)
  17. for sin used the law against me to deceiving me, by arousing my sinful passions, which killed me (1 Corinthians 15:56; Romans 7:5, 9-11).  
  18. A right standing with God is now available to all who believe and have faith in Jesus, which is the release from the charges of transgression under the curse of the law (Galatians 3:22-25; 4:1-5; 5:3-4; Romans 7:4-5, 23, 9-11; 8:3-4; James 2:12). 
  19. ​For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace ​(Romans 6:14).

The gospel message of grace = taught by jesus (the son)
(the law taught by angels to the servant (moses))


  1. Galatians 1:11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

From Grace back to the law


  1. Galatians 1:6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you [c]by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel [d]contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be [e]accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel [f]contrary to what you received, he is to be [g]accursed!
  2. ​Galatians 2:1-10 Paul gets 'approved' by the apostles in Jerusalem for having been teaching the true gospel message, while there the Judaizers had such a strong message that even Titus was circumcised.

Perversion of the Gospel

​Paul Defends His Ministry

  • NOTE: this was a POWERFUL MOVEMENT against the gospel (GENTILES MUST LIVE UNDER THE LAW)

4 But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. 5 But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you. 6 But from those who [b]were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God [c]shows no partiality)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me. 7 But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel [d]to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been [e]to the circumcised 8 (for He who effectually worked for Peter in his apostleship [f]to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles), 9 and recognizing the grace ​that had been given to me, [g]James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right [h]hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. 10 They only asked us to remember the poor—the very thing I also was eager to do.
  • NOTE: Paul's gospel message is 'approved' by the apostles, therefore it is the TRUE MESSAGE OF JESUS

Peter (Cephas) Opposed by Paul
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he [i]stood condemned. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from [j]James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing [k]the party of the circumcision. 13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 
  • NOTE: Paul apposes Cephas to his face for leading Barnabas and other Jews away from the true gospel message; trying to make the Gentiles live under the law

14 But when I saw that they were not [l]straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? [m] 
  1. 15 “We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles; 
    1. 16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of [n]the law 
      1. but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ
  2. and not by the works of [o]the law;
  3. since by the works of [p]the law no [q]flesh will be justified. 
    1. 17 But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners,
      1. is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be! 
  4. 18 For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 
    1. 19 For through [r]the law I died to [s]the law ,
      1. so that I might live to God. 
      2. NOTE: Paul is saying that he already died with Christ, so if he goes back to the law, he is trying to rebuild what is dead; furthermore if he should try this, although he would not, he would only find that he is a sinner!! because that's what they already established, the law showed them that they Jews are sinners too, just like the Gentiles. And additionally, no one is saved by works of the law. So all he gains by trying to go back to the law is that he is a sinner and is excluded from the opportunity to be justified, for it is only through faith in Jesus Christ! amen
      3. 20 I have been crucified with Christ;
      4. and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
      5. and [t]the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God,
        1. who loved me and gave Himself up for me. 
  5. 21 I do not nullify the grace ​of God,
    1. for if righteousness comes through [u]the law, 
      1. then Christ died needlessly.”

Faith Brings Righteousness​

3 [a]You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of [b]the law , or by [c]hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun [d]by the Spirit, are you now [e]being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you [f]suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works [g]miracles among you, do it by the works of [h]the law , or by [i]hearing with faith? 6 [j]Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 7 Therefore, [k]be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. 8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God [l]would justify the [m]Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with [n]Abraham, the believer. 10 For as many as are of the works of [o]the law  are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law , to perform them.” 11 Now that no one is justified [p]by [q]the law before God is evident; for, “[r]The righteous man shall live by faith.” 12 [s]However, the law  is not [t]of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live [u]by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law , having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a [v]tree”-- 14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might [w]come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Intent of the Law
15 Brethren, I speak [x]in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man’s [y]covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds [z]conditions to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. 17 What I am saying is this: the law , which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is [aa]based on law , it is no longer [ab]based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.
19 Why the law then? It was added [ac]because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the [ad]agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now a mediator is not [ae]for one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! Bond and Free
21 Tell me, you who want to be under law , do you not listen to the law ​? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. 23 But the son by the bondwoman [r]was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. 24 [s]This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children [t]who are to be slaves; [u]she is Hagar. 25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free; [v]she is our mother. 27 For it is written, “Rejoice, barren woman who does not bear; Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor; For more numerous are the children of the desolate Than of the one who has a husband.” 28 And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.” 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, [w]but of the free woman.

The Jew Is Condemned by the Law
17 But if you bear the name “Jew” and rely [p]upon the law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and [q]approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the law , 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 a [r]corrector of the foolish, a teacher of [s]the immature, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, 21 you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who [t]preach that one shall not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast [u]in the law ​, through your breaking the law , do you dishonor God? 24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written. ​25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice [v]the law ; but if you are a transgressor [w]of the law , your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if the [x]uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the law , will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the law , will he not judge you who [y]though having the letter of the law and circumcision are a transgressor [z]of the law ? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

With their tongues they keep deceiving,” “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness”; 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood, 16 Destruction and misery are in their paths, 17 And the path of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are [h]under the law , so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; 20 because by the works [i]of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for [j]through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

Justification by Faith
21 But now apart [k]from the law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those [l]who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all [m]have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace ​through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a [n]propitiation [o]in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, [p]because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who [q]has faith in Jesus. 27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law ? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 [r]For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works [s]of the law . 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? 7 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. 3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually. 4 Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth of the choicest spoils. 5 And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have commandment [a]in the law to collect [b]a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these [c]are descended from Abraham. 6 But the one whose genealogy is not traced from them collected [d]a tenth from Abraham and [e]blessed the one who had the promises. 7 But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8 In this case mortal men receive tithes, but in that case one receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives on. 9 And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him. 11 Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the law ), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law  also. 13 For the one concerning whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord [f]was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests. 15 And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become such not on the basis of a law of [g]physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is attested of Him, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” 18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. 20 And inasmuch as it was not without an oath 21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, “The Lord has sworn And will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest forever’”); 22 so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. 23 [h]The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save [i]forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the law ​, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.

A New and Living Way​
19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a [h]sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Christ or Judgment

Faith and Works

6 Brethren, even if [a]anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. 5 For each one will bear his own load. 6 The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. 10 So then, [b]while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. 11 See with what large letters I [c]am writing to you with my own hand. 12 Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted [d]for the cross of Christ. 13 For those who [e]are circumcised do not even keep [f]the law ​themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through [g]which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new [h]creation. 16 And those who will [i]walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. ​18 The grace ​of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. 12 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, [a]acceptable to God, which is your [b]spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this [c]world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may [d]prove what the will of God is, that which is good and [e]acceptable and perfect. 3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace ​given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, [f]according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if [g]service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with [h]liberality; he who [i]leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. 9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; [j]give preference to one another in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13 contributing to the needs of the [k]saints, [l]practicing hospitality. ​14 Bless those who persecute [m]you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but [n]associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. [o]Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but [p]leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
